Chuck is an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and operating executive with more than 30 years experience investing in and building life sciences businesses. Most recently he served as Chief Executive Officer of two development stage life sciences companies. From 2000 to 2003, Chuck was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lundbeck, the U.S. subsidiary of Copenhagen-based H. Lundbeck.
From 1988 to 1999, Chuck was a general partner at Hambro International Equity Partners and Cross Atlantic Partners, two U.S. venture capital units of the London-based merchant bank, Hambros.
In 1985, Chuck formed Metcalf Ross & Company to manage and commercialize intellectual property owned by academic institutions. The firm’s clients included Harvard Medical School, The University of Pennsylvania and Commonwealth BioVentures (Massachusetts Centers of Excellence).
In 1982, Chuck co-founded the Menlo Park-based biotechnology company Applied Immune Sciences in which he served as President and Chief Operating Officer through 1984. In time, the company was partnered to Rhône-Poulenc, then listed publicly, and ultimately acquired by its partner, Sanofi-Aventis.
Prior to the formation of Applied Immune Sciences, Chuck served two Fortune 100 Companies in an ascending series of marketing, business development and general management assignments in technology intensive businesses.
Over the course of his professional life, Chuck has engaged in enterprise development in Europe, Japan, Malaysia, India, and Latin America, as well as in North America. Over the past 27 years he has served on more than 20 boards of directors. He has served on, as well as chaired, both Audit and Compensation Committees of several boards.
From 2003 to 2007, Chuck served as a fund management advisor to the life sciences and health care investment funds of Copenhagen-based Danske Bank. He is a former National Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Chuck is also a former infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Chuck earned an undergraduate degree at the University of California at Davis, and has done graduate study at the Harvard Business School, Columbia University and The Wharton School.
