This sector is becoming an area of very rapidly growing value creation – particularly given the ongoing global crises in food and energy. Spending on animal health is rising at double digit rates particularly in the companion animal area. The area of generic pharmaceuticals has seen high growth and today more than half of all medicines prescribed in the United States are generic. The life science tools area has exhibited explosive growth as the range of equipment and supplies used to development biotechnology products has grown. Simultaneously, the capital intensive biologics manufacturing business has become substantially larger. All of this has caused the tools sector to expand. Today, there are over 1,000 small companies developing innovative medical devices and several dozen large companies. This is an area of tremendous importance in the life sciences with high profitability and growth. The MNN sector lies in between the food and vitamin sector and the traditional regulated pharmaceutical sector. This industry develops products that are not regulated by the FDA as drugs but have some therapeutic properties. We also include companies that use the tools of biotechnology to develop better flavorings and foods in the MNN sector. Torreya Partners has been active in this area, working with several companies that are developing natural products that can be marketed either as medical foods or under DSHEA.Major and Specialty Pharmaceuticals
The largest segment of the life sciences sector by market value comprises major and specialty pharmaceutical companies. Torreya Partners has strong relationships throughout this subsector and many of our principals have previously worked for players in the area. We have been particularly active in specialty pharmaceutical subsegments including dermatology, drug delivery, gastrointestinal and women’s health.Therapeutic Platforms
One of the most vital areas of the life sciences has involved the development of technological platforms for the development of new drugs. These platform technologies have involved classes of drugs such as antibodies or peptides, methods for developing proteins with favorable structures (e.g., glycosylation patterns), and novel methods for the treatment of disease such as anti-sense, RNA interference or gene therapy.
